Remedy IT has published the TAO Programmers Guide v0.18 (TPG for short). This version of the TPG is updated for ACE/TAO/CIAO x.6.3. One of the interested new sections is a description how to generate project files for the WindRiver Workbench 2.6 (shipped with VxWorks 6.4). With these project files ACE/TAO/CIAO and your application can be build from the WorkBench. You can download a free copy of the TPG from http://www.theaceorb.nl

Remedy IT has been working several years on the VxWorks port now. The last 6
months a lot of work has been done and it is now a good moment for a global
status update of the VxWorks port.

VxWorks 5.5.1 support was phased out of maintenance Jan 1st, 2007, but we
recently revived this port on request of one of our customers. ACE/TAO x.6.3
builds and runs out of the box for VxWorks 5.5.1 again. We are currently
working on a few last test failures after which ACE/TAO x.6.4 will have a
fully validated port again. As the contract is for a one time update
activity, shortly after x.6.4 we will end the maintenance again. If there is
enough interest and funding for this port we can keep it maintained for a
longer period of time.

The VxWorks 6.x port has recently been extended with an update for VxWorks 6.6
support. We run regular compile only builds for VxWorks 6.3/4/5/6. Regular
runtime testing is performed for VxWorks 6.4 kernel and rtp mode at this
moment. We are discussing with some interested parties to extend our testing
to VxWorks 6.6.

A recent addition is a MPC generator for the WindRiver Workbench 2.6 which
makes it possible to build ACE/TAO using the Workbench.

Furthermore we are looking for additional sponsors to fund the port to VxWorks
using shared libraries and extend the number of tests we perform for VxWorks.

All changes we have made are available as part of the DOC group version of
ACE/TAO. All build and test results can be found online at
http://scoreboard.theaceorb.nl. We have set up a document with updated
instructions on how to build and use ACE/TAO on VxWorks. This information
is for customers only.

The doxygen documentation for the release is also available. The
prebuild cidlc binaries will be available tomorrow. In addition to
the packages combined of sources and generate makefiles, this release
also provides source-only packages for the group of users who
use MPC to generate their own makefiles.

applications, and let us know if you encounter any problems. Please use

The overall success rates for the test results gathered from all our
daily builds is 98% for the ACE tests and 95% for the TAO tests. Please

We are working hard to get everything ready for TAO 1.6, which is the next “official” release of TAO that is due out in several weeks. In addition to many bug fixes and improvements, we have also significantly reduced the footprint of TAO. In particular, the following tasks have been performed:
- Moved optional CORBA features to new libraries
- Enhanced TAO’s CORBA/e and Minimum CORBA profiles to limit the features of TAO when one of these profiles is enabled
- When CORBA/e or Minimum CORBA is enabled the IDL compiler will generate less code
- Added TAO-specific defines/features to limit the features

We have been tracking the footprint on our scoreboard (see http://www.dre.vanderbilt.edu/scoreboard/). There you find a footprint build for regular builds, as well as CORBA/e and Minimum CORBA builds.

Using CORBA/e micro and some TAO-specific defines we have reduced the footprint of the Hello World server example by 17% compared to x.5.10
and 25% compared to x.5.7. The Hello Server is now 1,095,406 bytes and the Hello client 738,527 bytes, which is about 35% smaller then when you build
the Hello server out of the box without setting any defines.

There are more ideas to reduce the footprint even more, we think we can get the Hello World server below the 1Mb of footprint. If you are interested in sponsoring this effort, let us know.

Remedy IT has completed the port of TAO to OpenVMS 8.3 IA64. This port will be part of the upcoming TAO 1.6 release. For more information see http://www.theaceorb.nl

Last week TAO 1.5.10 has been released as last beta before the minor TAO 1.6 release. This release can be downloaded from http://download.dre.vanderbitl.edu

The doc group ask all TAO users to start testing with the 1.5.10 beta and let us know the results, positive and negative. That way any issues can be addressed before the release of TAO 1.6

Remedy IT is pleased to announce the first beta release of the Ruby CORBA
Language mapping reference implementation: R2CORBA.
This software is provided as Opensource (for license see:
http://www.theaceorb.nl/en/r2corba-license.html).

R2CORBA provides a fully RCLM compliant implementation based on the TAO ORB.
The current release provides:

o 100% native Ruby IDL compiler
o support for direct IDL inclusion in Ruby code
o support for Ruby CORBA clients
o support for Ruby CORBA servants
o support for Dynamic Skeleton Interface (DSI)
o support for Dynamic Invocation Interface (DII)
o support for IDL enum, struct, sequence and union datatypes
o and more…

The distribution contains several regression tests which also serve as example
code. Currently tested platforms include Windows (MSVC 7.1), Linux (GCC) and
Solaris (GCC and SunCC).

Remedy IT is pleased to announce the first draft of the Ruby CORBA Language
Mapping. This language mapping describes the mapping of OMG IDL constructs
to the Ruby programming language.

This draft mapping has been written as part of the documentation for
R2CORBA. R2CORBA is an open source product currently in development by
Remedy IT which makes it possible to implement CORBA clients *and* servers
using the Ruby programming language. R2CORBA can be viewed as the reference
implementation of the Ruby CORBA Language Mapping.

Remedy IT provides a presentation regarding this draft mapping at the OMG
Meeting in Brussels Wednesday June 27th 2007. The main objective of this
presentation is to see how we can come to a formal language mapping. After
the meeting the presentation will be available from our website.
